By Ben Kingsley

Divorce or separation is the solution preferred by many married couples if their relationship is no longer working. The number of divorce in Indiana is increasing and because of this, access to the records is becoming a little difficult for many. This is the reason why the divorce records of Indiana is opened to the public. The implementation of the Freedom of Information Act has made it possible to easily access the documents.

Divorce records in Indiana are used by the residents for a number of reasons. The document is one of the primary sources of information for genealogy research. It contains information that is vital in updating the family registry. The future generation would have difficulty tracing their family history if the separation of the divorce of a family member is not updated. The document is used when dealing with any government transactions such as insurance or any financial matters involving the couple. Divorce records are also used by other people to check on the marital status of an individual.

One can find a lot of useful information in divorce certificate. As the name suggest, the document would contain details about where and when the couple was granted legal separation. The public document would only contain the basic information about the separation. Other vital information is kept confidential. One would not find details about the children's custody and the settlement of about the couple's properties and assets on a public file. This information is kept private to respect the privacy of the people involved.

In Indiana, the office of the Vital Records Section of the Department of Health does not release certified copies of such documents. In order to get a copy of a divorce record, one may need to visit the county where the divorce was granted. If one does not know where to go, the state office can help verify this information for a certain fee. A separate processing fee has to be paid when doing the actual search of the document at the county. Residents of Indiana can only request for their personal divorce records. If one needs to access the files of other people, a special permit is needed to proceed.

Requests can also be done by sending a mail request to the county office. Again, if the county where the divorce was filed is unknown, the request has to be first sent to the Vital Records Section for verification. The results of a mail request can take a days or even weeks depending on the retrieval process. To avoid waiting for several days, the search can be done through the Internet.

The Internet has made the retrieval of marriage and divorce records hassle free and fast. It has eliminated the need to go to the office just to file the request. One can even do the search at the comforts of their own home and the results can be delivered in just a few seconds instead of days. This is why residents of Indiana would prefer to conduct the search through the Internet.
