Religious Practices In The Lutheran Church

By Winifred Christensen

The biggest name in Lutheranism is Martin Luther, a former monk who turned away from the Catholic Faith and established the Lutheran belief. This is part of Protestantism but Luther retained some of the beliefs and practices he learned from his former religion. But he made sure that all practices were not against the scriptures.

For Luther, most of the Catholic teachings were against the bible. But he still believed that every person needs to be baptized to cleanse them from sins. The Lutheran Church Wilmington baptizes both infants and the adults. But they discourage confession with a priest or a pastor. They think that they need to communicate directly to God.

They also believe that the only salvation is through faith and not through the sacraments. This religion constantly reminds followers that they have to encounter the Almighty individually. In addition, they rely solely on the scriptures believing that it is the only thing that contains and holds all truths. That is why Lutheranism is very particular with the Bible.

There are approximately, sixty million Lutherans in the world and they are spreading continually. They have a book of concord which is what all Lutherans consider as their basis for practice and confession. This book constitutes the various texts in which they base their belief in.

For many, religion is very important because this is one of the standards of social and cultural orientations of a community, family, or individuals. This is guides believers so that they can act according to moral and spiritual standards. This will in turn, make them act righteously. Different religions differ in practices depending on how they interpret the scriptures.

Worshipping comes with prayer. And prayer must be part of the daily habit of a true Christian. It is not necessary to go to church most of the time. As long as they do not forget to pray and to communicate constantly with the Almighty, they will not lose their way. Some are too busy but they still find time to insert prayer into their hectic schedules. This is already part of life in general, for a Christian.

Devout Christians are believed to be intact with their family. Because of their faith, they believe that being together as a family and avoiding sins like adultery keeps the husband and wife together. So they are less likely to get separated or to get divorced. Families that do things together, especially if they pray together, will stay stronger. In turn, it has a strong social implication wherein good values are also taught to the children to become ethical and moral members of the society.

Faith is where the hopefuls derive their strength from. If someone gets sick, he or she who hangs on to faith will eventually be hopeful that healing is already in their hands. They declare it. There are also others who have lost their way because of drugs, alcohol, and other vices but once they have embraced religious practices, they have suddenly found withdrawal and recovery easy to do.

Hence, there is social good when it comes to religious practices. One does not have to be extremely devout that it comes to a point of spending all of the time in the church and in prayer. But there is a need to practice it even outside the church in any kind of activity.
