By Brenda Warner

Catholicism is a mainstream Christian faith. It has followers in different parts of the world. Being a believer comes with the responsibility of sticking to particular moral matters. There are different catholic views. Most of them have a strong basis on the Holy Scriptures. Some are the products of human consensus that were arrived at important church meetings. The conference of senior clergy that is held on an annual basis is a time when major church decisions are arrived at. Catholicism shares core beliefs with other Christian churches. This is because the different churches have the same foundation. Devout followers abide to stipulated regulations.

The most basic belief lies with the supremacy of the Bible. It is agreed that this is a sacred book and other books are inferior to the Holy Bible. It is the moral compass that guides the believer to the path of light. The Bible is believed as the point of reference. In case of confusion, it is referred to for purposes of facilitating clarity. According to Catholicism, the Bible is inspired and it is error free.

Every Catholic has to read, know and understand The Ten Commandments. Without these, the life of a Christian will be directionless without goal or purpose. The path to fulfillment starts at The Commandments. Not only in understanding them and having them written at the back of one's hand but also putting every single law into practice. There are no go zones according to these set of laws. These include murder, adultery, fornication and lust. All the dos can be summarized into love. The love for The Supreme and the love for other humans.

Holy Trinity is a basic belief of Catholicism. The sign of the trinity is usually made after prayers. The Supreme Being exists in three forms. Each form plays an important role.

Sin and sinfulness is the reason why Adam and Eve were removed from the Garden of Eden. Every human that is born of a woman is born with original sin that has been inherited from the first generation of humans. This can only be removed by the act of baptism. In Catholicism, one is baptized by water being poured on one's head. When this act is being performed, the person being baptized has to totally renounce sin in the presence of a priest.

Everyone has fallen short of grace because of sins. Being made right again in the eyes of The Creator is done by pure grace and not any personal acts. No one can save himself but salvation is through the kindness of The Supreme. The whole affair is an act of faith. The forgiven person has to embrace repentance and live a life that exhibits a turning away from sin.

Sexual purity is an important issue in most Christian denominations. The faithful are required to avoid all kinds of sexual sin including adultery and lust. Sex must be confined to the marriage bed. Catholicism has greatly emphasized chastity. Leading a morally clean life is associated with earthly and heavenly benefits.

Churches are governed by doctrines that are based on the Holy Bible. There are consequences for disobedience and rewards for obedience. The path to obedience leads to earthly benefits and eternal rewards.
